보이지 않는 색 – 얼개
‘내 안에는 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것들의 대립이 늘 존재한다.’
보이는 것들은 물질 세계를 의미하지만 보이지 않는 세계는 이상적인 세상, 우리가 품고 있는 소망하는 곳을 의미한다.
우리가 이미 알고 있음에도 미처 인지하지 못하는 곳, 그리고 심상에 존재하고 있으나 보이지 않는 곳을 말한다. 나는 이러한 보이지 않는 세계를 표현하기 위해 "색과 얼개"라는 매개체를 사용한다.
색채 심리학에 의하면 노란색은 자신감, 낙천적인 태도와 지적 능력을 상징하며 근육에 사용되는 에너지로 표현되기도 한다. 또한 기능을 자극하며 상처를 회복하는 노란색은 질투의 의미로 사용되기도 하지만 밝음과 행복감 창의력을 상징하는 긍정적 의미로 많이 쓰인다.
‘나는 보이지 않는 노란색을 통해서 이상적이며 조건 없는 나눔의 현실화를 꿈꾼다.’
삶이란 노력한 대가를 보상받지 못한다 하더라도 끊임없이 살아가야 하는 시간이고 감내해야 하는 여정이다. 이러한 과정 가운데 타인과의 원만한 관계를 위해서는 자신을 먼저 사랑해야 하는 것이 우선이다. 우리에게 긍정적 삶을 유지하기 위해서는 선한 에너지와 자신만의 안식처가 필요한데 노란색은 우리에게 희망의 메시지와 현실을 이겨내도록 자신감을 불러 일으켜 주는 힘을 가지고 있다.
‘화려하나 때로는 소박한 “얼개”(구조물)는 사람의 마음을 품고 있다.’
얼개는 색면과 선으로 이루어진 유기체에 불과하지만 얼개는 본향을 향해 가고 있으며 나눔으로 인해 사람들이 행복해 하는 것을 기대한다. 보이지 않는 색을 그린다는 것은 작가로서 끊임없는 도전이고 가슴 벅찬 일이다. 그럼에도 작업을 지속적으로 할 수 있는 이유는 과정 과정들이 나에게는 “회복의 시간, 화해의 시간”이 되기 때문이며 주신 나의 재능을 통해 더 나은 세상을 제시하고 공유하라는 약속을 지키기 위함이다.
Prologue
The Unseen Color – Ulgae
The struggle between the seen and the unseen has always existed in my mind. While the seen world is physical and material, the unseen is an ideal world of my hopes and dreams. “Color and Ulgae” is my attempt as an artist to express this invisible world.
The invisible world is equivalent to an unseen color. Through the vehicle of “Colors and Ulgae”, I attempt to express this unseen color and its message. The color yellow represents self-confidence, an optimistic mentality, and energy. Although it is also an indication of jealousy, yellow ultimately assumes positivity by denoting brightness, a sense of happiness, and creativity. Through an unseen yellow, I dream of achieving my ideal of sharing.
“The ‘ elegant but also simple ’ ulgae implies the human mind.”
Although ulgae consists of only colors and lines, it is also the journey of our souls toward our homeland. It is my calling as an artist to capture a color that cannot be seen. To express and share a world that cannot be seen is the artist’s sacred mission. Creating art that portrays the invisible is an endless challenge that fills my heart.
The reason I love my work is because it creates for me a ‘time and place for recovery and reconciliation’ and through my work I can use the talent given to me by God to help improve the world and share in its wonders.

보이지 않는 색 – 얼개
“문명의 발전은 누군가의 희생의 산물이며 결과물이다” 라고 말한 것처럼 더불어 사는 사회는 누군가의 배려와 나눔의 집합체이다. 사람은 누구나 각자의 모습대로 재능을 가지고 있다. 정신적 물질적 재능을 나눔으로써 기부자나 수혜자 모두 온전한 기쁨과 감사를 느낄 때 우리는 이상적 현실에 더 가까이 근접하게 된다. 즉, 이상적 현실화란 비움과 나눔의 반복적인 교차이며 행복으로의 초대를 극대화 시키는 것이다.
백 년에 한번 꽃이 핀다는 센츄리 플랜트(용설란)가 있다. 용설란이 만개할 때 수많은 새들의 향연과 향기가 온 대지를 덮는다고 한다. 새들에 의해 수정을 하게 되는 용설란은 긴 시간 인내를 통해 최고의 감동을 보여주는 것이다. 사막의 척박한 환경과 조건에도 희미한 물줄기를 끌어 모아 꽃을 피우는 사막의 식물들을 보면서 생명됨의 희망을 바라보게 된다. 그렇듯 우리도 호흡을 다듬고 자신을 담금질 하여 세상을 이롭게 하고 서로에게 감동을 주며 살아가야 한다. 이러한 작은 노력들이 세상을 아름답게 변화 시킬 수 있는 자극제가 되는 것이며 그 매뉴얼을 전해야 하는 것이 우리들의 의무가 아닐까 생각해 본다.

The Unseen Color - Ulgae
Life is a journey that must be endured even when the fruits of our labor cannot be guaranteed. For our survival, we must rely on forming strong relationships with others, which require us to love ourselves. To maintain such a positive outlook on life, we need both energy and a safe haven. The color yellow has the power to spread hope and evoke in us the self-confidence necessary to overcome the harsh reality.
“The progress of civilization is both the product and result of one’s sacrifice.” As such, a healthy society is the collaboration of compassion and sharing. Everyone has his own talents, and when both the producer and beneficiary feel the joy and gratitude of sharing spiritual and material talents, we come closer to an ideal society. In other words, achieving the ideal is the repeated combination of emptying and sharing that helps to maximize happiness.
We are created for lives of goodness and love. However, our lives are fatigued by the imperfections and greed of this world, making it increasingly difficult for us to find natural beauty. Nevertheless, hope remains when we think of what we are grateful for.
The century plant (agave) is rumored to bloom only once in a hundred years. However, when it fully blooms, the entire earth is covered by the feast and fragrances of countless birds. Pollinated by the birds, the century plant’s long wait brings forth inspiration. Observing these desert plants blossom after gathering the faintest sources of water in such adverse conditions, one can only be hopeful toward life. Like the century plant, we must learn to control our approach to life to ensure a sustainable world and inspire one another. I believe that such efforts can preserve the beauty of our world, and it is upon us to convey this ‘manual’ to the next generation.
